I am back from my week-long hiatus, in which I went to Berlin, fell in love with the city and then sadly had to return to my home where it’s very boring and I have to go to school and let me just cry a little. I was so busy sightseeing that I didn’t even have the time to miss blogging! I’m very glad to be back at blogging though! It was strangely hard to come up with a topic to talk about today but I found something.
Today I wanted to talk about what makes me want to read a book. And I will not go into covers and titles, even though those play a very important role. Each topic will include examples of books I read and loved and books I want to read! So basically, this is a recommendation/tbr post 😛
#1 Dark fantasy
I totally blame V.E. Schwab for this because her books are so wonderfully dark, it makes every other book feel light! It’s kind of weird, but I love it when books have a lot of dark themes, such as death, destruction, murder, assassins. Anything that’s inherently bad, I love it.

#2 Con-artists & illusionists
I love it when characters are not who everyone thinks they are, when they have to fake to be someone else or something else. Illusions and cons are so much fun! There’s the complexity of coming across as genuine while there is the constant tension of not being caught.

#3 Complex characters
Any character that’s morally grey, has many flaws and is not the hero by design will catch my attention. I love it when characters are flawed and not really the nicest people. Characters like Kaz from Six of Crows with skewed morals are the best kind of characters to read about.

#4 Feminism
Give me all the female strong characters that fight for feminism (or male characters? But those are rarer)! If a story is about feminism or has feminist aspects to it, I am immediately drawn to it!

#5 LGBT+ rep
For obvious reasons, I’m not a huge fan of romance, but when the romance is between LGBT+ characters or when the characters are just on the LGBT+ spectrum, I will immediately like it 147% more (I made that number up don’t worry).

#6 A diverse group of teens
LGBT+ aside, I love it when there’s a group of teens that are of different cultures, backgrounds, etc. I always like it when a book changes POVs, it always gives an extra dimension to the story because you get to see things in different perspectives!
To read
#7 Coming-of-age
If it’s a story about growing up, gaining confidence and about that phase in life where you have to start making the big decisions, I will want to read it. I love stories in which the characters have to grow out of their small comfort zone and go out in the world, discover themselves. For this reason, I love it when books are set in the last year of high school.

I can’t think of any at this moment!
#8 When it’s written by one of my favourite authors
This is a very obvious one, but there are some authors that have become instant favourites, and I will read whatever they come up with. EVERYTHING. Especially when it comes to V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, Laini Taylor, Holly Bourne, Maggie Stiefvater and Marissa Meyer.
I personally cannot get into certain fantasy for the life of me (mostly dark fantasy or high fantasy like lord of GOT) but I do agree with your LGBTQ+ one! I don’t know why but I love any and all books about diverse characters :3 Great list!

Yeah some kinds of fantasy don’t work for me either, high fantasy with lots of worldbuilding are often a struggle for me! Especially books like Lord of the Rings!
Diverse characters are amazing!
Thank you!

Your list is fabulous and I agree with all of this, besides the one with the last year of high-school, because that hits too close to home. It’s been 2 years, but I still get anxious just thinking of that period. But such great recommendations, definitely adding them to my tbr, thank you! ❤

Haha I understand! High school has been a little over three years ago for me but it never was very stressful 🙂 I hope you love them!

I love reading feminist books and it’s probably why I love Moxie so much. I did actually find a few recommendations from your post and although I’m not a big fantasy fan, I’m planning on picking up Six of Crows eventually. This was such a cool post idea!

I love Moxie too! I’m glad you found some recommendations you liked! I am not a huge fan of many fantasy series and it takes quite a lot for me to pick up one, but Six of Crows is one of those exceptions that is too good to pass up on!

Oooh I’ve been hearing a lot about how good that duology is and how much people rave about it so it’s tempting me to pick it up even more.

What a great post! If a book has complex characters and/or is a coming of age story I am so in! I really need to read We Are the Ants!

This is such a great list! I absolutely agree with you on almost all of these, especially dark fantasy and con-artists. I‘m currently reading Forest of a Thousand Lanterns & so far it’s really good, so I‘d say, pick that up if you have the chance. As for con-artists, maybe check out Holly Black‘s Curse Workers series, the first book is called White Cat. I really enjoyed it and the idea was definitely very unique! 😊
As for complex characters, you listed Graceling; Kristin Cashore‘s books remain to be one of my fave fantasy books, ever. Definitely give them a try! I love the characters of Graceling‘s companion novel, Fire, even more though 🌸

Ooh thanks for the recommendation! I’ve heard good things about White Cat before so I should definitely give it a try! I wanna read Forest of a Thousand Lanterns so bad! I feel bad about still not having picked up Graceling, everyone has been telling me how good it is!

Oh, don’t feel bad! I wish I hadn’t read Graceling yet, so that I could read it again for the first time. Cashore’s world-building is a+, honestly. 😊 and FoaTL is really good so far, I‘m very excited about where the story is going. Fairy tale retellings are always so interesting, because you never really know what the author might change from the original story 😳

It’s been on my shelves so long! I should read it soon! I’m glad you like it! Yes I love that about fairy tale retellings

I love, love, love myself a bit of a darker book! Doesn’t even have to be fantasy and if you don’t mind a dark book that isn’t fantasy, I HIGHLY recommend And I Darken by Kiersten White! It is DARK. And murderous. And freaking awesome! PLUS. It has both a gay and lesbian characters, deals with Islam and is set in the Ottoman empire. Honestly, I’ve really come to love this series so much and I think everyone should read it! And going off my love for And I Darken I recently added The City Of Brass to my TBR – it is also set in the Ottoman empire and is about a female con artist! So, like that sounded like a possible jackpot!
And I obviously will read most of the books that some of my favorite authors have written because how could I not? I am currently sitting over here impatiently waiting for Renegades! While still having to read All The Crooked Saints. But I will get to it eventually. I can’t wait to see what Maggie did in that book!

I should definitely check out both those books!! Thanks for the recommendations! I had heard great things about both of them!
Ah yes Renegades! I can’t wait for it, and also same about All The Crooked Saints. It’s been on my shelves for a few weeks but I still haven’t read it!

Coming of age and Dark fantasy are the biggest reasons I’ll pick up a book! Those are very opposite genres but depending on my mood I’ll usually pick up a book from one of them. My favorite books usually end up within one of those genres

All good points! I am such a sucker for coming of age stories (maybe because I’m coming of age???). If a book promises a good coming of age story that will make me both sad and happy, or sad because I’m happy, then I’m sold. I also LOVE these feminism books that keep coming out. Give me ALLL the girl power. Similar to that is good female friendships. That’s what I need in my life.
