I’m going to give this another swing, but this time going through my someday-maybe shelf. I have several shelves on my Goodreads, one of which my to-read shelf, on which I put all the books I really want to read (it’s about 30 books right now) and for all those books I’m not 100% sure I put them on my someday-maybe shelf. It has gathered dust for a while now and I think it’s time to go through it and sort it all out! I’m going to give myself three options: move to to-read shelf, delete, or keep on someday-maybe shelf.

We Awaken by Calista Lynne

I was actually planning on keeping this book because it has asexual representation, but then I reread the blurb and realized that was the only thing about this book that interests me. It is about some kind of dream realm with a girl and a comatose brother and I would never pick it up if it weren’t for the representation, so that says enough. This one can go.

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

Everybody seems to love Adam Silvera, but I just don’t ever feel like reading any of his books. They just don’t interest me?? They’re all very sad, I’ve heard, and will break your heart and I just never feel like reading anything like it. Although I think his concepts are so imaginative and interesting, I don’t think they’re for me. So sorry, but this one is going as well.

More Happy than Not by Adam Silvera

The same holds for this one, it’s just never going to happen, so it’s going.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The Shadow of the Wind has been recommended to me several times and though it is historic fiction (which I barely read) I think I would really enjoy this one. However, it is very big and big historic books are scary, okay. My dad actually owns the Dutch translation of this book and I think I’m definitely going to read it if I’m in the right mood. This one is going on my TBR.

Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

I own and read the entirety of the Firebird series by Claudia Gray and I really enjoyed them. However, when I read the last book this year, I realized that it might just not be my taste anymore. The first book I read several years ago and since then my reading tastes have developed and I don’t think I’d like the series as much anymore now. This one seems to have (again) a lot of love drama in it and that’s just not for me. This one can go.

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

I still don’t know what to do with this book. I love Sherlock Holmes stories and it does sound fun but I have heard very mixed things about it. I think I’m just going to keep this on my someday-maybe shelf.

The Sherlock Holmes Handbook by Ransom Riggs

Like I said, I love Sherlock Holmes. This is non-fiction, which is something I don’t usually pick up but it’s also written by Ransom Riggs, whose writing I really enjoy. Again, I’m going to keep this on my someday-maybe shelf.

Almost Like Being in Love by Steve Kluger

This is an m/m romance story, and though I like that it’s diverse, I’m not sure I’ll pick it up any day soon. I have read and loved My Most Excellent Year by the same author but have yet to pick up any of his other books. I’m going to delete this (with a little pain in my heart).

Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger

Again, Steve Kluger, this one, however, has raving reviews and it sounds like a lot of fun. I’m going to keep this on my someday-maybe shelf, and if I enjoy this one a lot I might move Almost Like Being in Love back.

Dreamology by Lucy Keating

I adore this cover. However, the whole storyline seems to be about romance, and I’m not usually a big fan of romance as the major plot. I just spend a few minutes scrolling through reviews on goodreads and everybody seems to be super positive, so I’m going to keep it on my someday-maybe shelf for now.

The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan

I honestly don’t know what this book is about, but I do know it has been recommended to me several times and that it is written entirely in prose/poems and that sounds like a very interesting thing. I am going to keep this on my someday-maybe list because I’m not sure I’ll pick this up any day soon, but I still am interested in it.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Yeah… I’m quite done with the shadowhunter world in general, and I’ve seen this book in my library. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to pick this up, but it’s huge and I rather spend my time reading something else. So bye Lady Midnight, you’re going!

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

I don’t really know what to make of this one, it has brilliant reviews and the rating is really high. But on the other hand, it’s dystopia and at this moment I’m not really interested in that genre. Therefore, this will stay on my someday-maybe list.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth

This book has gotten so much hate for being racist and I’m not interested in reading it. Sorry, not sorry. This will be deleted!

Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza

I was anticipating this book so much, but I still haven’t read it. I picked it up at the library one day and read the first page, which was a list of definitions or something, and then I put it back on the shelf. It also has very mediocre reviews, so I’m not really interested anymore. *shrugs* This book will go.

Down The TBR Hole #17 | Looking Back & Discussing TBRs

During these 17 weeks I had no idea this would become so big! Every week more and more people join in and that so cool! So thank you all for joining, I hope it’ll help you to get your TBR under control.

Nikki from The Night Is Dark and Full Of Books suggested I do a “looking back” post, which I thought was a great idea! So hereby my looking back at 16 weeks of going through my tbr!

I started off with about 90 books (I don’t remember exactly), which isn’t much, but it felt like I was drowning in it anyway. Whenever I went through my tbr to see what I could read next I automatically skipped over some books, simply because I didn’t even remember why they were on there.

During this process I went through 80 of these books and removed 26 (later a few got added back) and the current state of my tbr is 56 books. On average I removed about 2/5th of the books I went through, excluding the last few posts. I’ve added some books in the past months and I’ve read some, but I’ve read more than I added, which is a good sign!

Some thoughts on tbrs and things I’ve learned:

• Adding books only because they’re popular, is not a good idea. Popularity does not mean you’ll like it.
• Adding books should be because you think it’s something you’re really going to enjoy. I’ve gotten way more critical about which books I add, and which not.
• People’s opinions can be different. Removing a book and having someone tell you it’s their favourite or so amazing (*cough* Throne of Glass *cough*) can be quite difficult, because if they love it, you should too right? But sometimes you really have to put your feet down and remove it anyway. You know what? It felt so good removing ToG from my tbr!
• Going through your tbr one-by-one makes you more aware of what’s on there. I’ve discovered some new favourites and got excited for books that I completely forgot about!
• A tbr needs some sort of homeostasis point, there needs to be a balance between the books you read and the books you add, otherwise, it would become one big endless hole.
• I will probably never get to the end of my tbr, but that doesn’t matter because there are too many good books out there.
• Filtering through your tbr every once in a while, is really helpful to get rid of those books you have no interest in reading anymore.

I don’t know what I’m going to do for the next weeks, there’s not much to go through on my tbr anymore. Maybe I’ll do a shout-out to a book on my tbr? Or I’ll come up with some new idea 🙂

Since I am pretty much at the end of my TBR and am determined to read all the books yet to come I am just going to do a shout-out to 5 books on my TBR. (You all should definitely keep slashing down your TBRs, but right now there is no slashing to do for me :P).

I am simply going to continue with the books that I ended with last week:

Quicksilver by R.J. Anderson

This is actually the second book in a series, and I have not read the first. The reason this is on my tbr is because I have been told that there is asexual representation in it! I can’t really get anything out of the blurb but it sounds intriguing.

 

 

 

 

A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

This is a story about a mute girl and a deaf boy and it sounds absolutely amazing. It’s a love story and I have heard amazing things about it so I can’t wait to read it!

 

 

 

 

We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson

This cover is so beautiful! (Seriously, I’m in awe). The story is about a boy named Henry and he is just a regular-ish kid with a messed up family, but then he gets abducted by aliens and given the opportunity to either let them destroy the world or save it, with just the click of a button. Don’t let the alien thing distract you because this story sounds so good! It is that I can’t buy the book right now because the paperback is unavailable, but otherwise I would!

 

 

We Awaken by Calista Lynne

This book sounds a little vague, it is something about dreams and a girl who’s asexual and then the main character finds out she’s asexual too. It seems like a contemporary but I don’t think it is… It’s a little weird. If someone has read this, can you explain it?

 

 

 

 

 

We Go Forward by Alison Evans

As you might have noticed a few of these books have asexual representation and that was actually what I was looking for at that moment. This book also has asexual representation and it is about Christie and Roslyn who are both travelling and they find each other and travel together. As I have heard it has bi, POC, ace and non-binary characters and it takes place in Berlin!

Since I am pretty much at the end of my TBR and am determined to read all the books yet to come I am just going to do a shout-out to 5 books on my TBR. (You all should definitely keep slashing down your TBRs, but right now there is no slashing to do for me :P).

The Books

Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman

This book has been nominated for several awards and it reminded me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time by Mark Haddon, which I loved. The story is about Harri and his friend Dean who are trying to solve the murder of one of their classmates. It is said to be a story of wonder, mystery and danger and sounds great! I already own a copy of this book.

Dividing Eden by Joelle Charbonneau

By the writer of The Testing trilogy, this book will come out this year. It sounds like a story of intrigue and betrayal, a brother and sister who are twins race for the crown. It sounds really good and the cover is very beautiful.

The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz

If you don’t know it yet, I’m a little obsessed with Sherlock Holmes and this is a book about Sherlock Holmes, so obviously I have to read it. It is set in the same era as the original stories and is said to have the same brilliance as the Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

I have removed this and put it then back on my tbr, I have heard very mixed things about it but it is so well-known that it must be good. I’ll just have to try and see, I guess.

Flame In The Mist by Renee Ahdier

The next novel by the brilliant writer of The Wrath & The Dawn, can’t be anything but good! I’m just waiting for it to come out so I can delve into another amazing world. It sounds like it is a Mulan retelling but I’m not sure and it is set in Japan I believe.

Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger

Again, I should read more Steve Kluger Books, since I loved My Most Excellent Year. I have to say I don’t like any of the covers of this book… Steve Kluger should get some better ones for his novels! His books are all contemporaries and the covers just don’t really match the feeling of the books.

Dreamology by Lucy Keating

Only the cover itself already makes me want to read it, it’s just so pretty! The story sounds really interesting too, it’s about a girl who dreams of a boy that then suddenly shows up in her life, for real.

A Boy Called M.O.U.S.E. by Penny Dolan

I’ve already bought this book, and it looks so cool, besides, I barely ever read Middle Grade, so I look forward to trying that out!

Dangerous by Shannon Hale

Again, a book I already own, I just need to get up and read it! Admittedly I bought this book 50% for the story and 50% for the quote on the cover that says “One of the best books I’ve ever read. Ever.” by James Dashner (whose books I highly enjoyed so that means it has to be good right?)
