Most of you probably know this feeling, you’re Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realize that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well that’s going to change! I have thought of a new “meme” thing, I don’t know. It’s something I’m going to do weekly, but if you like to join in, you’re more than welcome!
Anyway, it works like this:
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
The fact that I (you?) will be repeating this process every week means that I have to keep track of where I ended and where I’m going to continue. E.g. in week one I do book 1 – 5, in week two book 6 – 10, and so on, until I’ve filtered out my entire TBR. If it isn’t clear, read on and I’ll show you!
The books:
The Fellowship of the Ring – J.R.R. Tolkien
I’ve had the Lord of the Rings omnibus on my shelves for a long time, and I’ve tried reading it. I was just so bored, that I just had to give up after 300 pages. I even watched the movie and I can say I’ve been, if possible, even more uninterested. I was just waiting for it to end.
The Judgement: GO
The Sherlock Holmes Handbook – Ransom Riggs
This is going to be short. Sherlock Holmes + Ransom Riggs?? It doesn’t get much better than this.
The Judgement: KEEP
Wuthering Heights – Emily Brontë
I tried okay, I just don’t understand the book. They started talking in old English and I didn’t understand a word of what they said. I will keep my copy and maybe some day I’ll try again. But for now..
The Judgement: GO
A Brief History of Time – Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking is one of those people that is just awesome, he’s funny, extremely smart and interesting. This is a informational book, and I am ashamed to say that it’s been on my nightstand for like a year. It’s not even my own copy (tbh my brother doesn’t miss it). I just never got past chapter one. I will one day conquer this book! (hopefully before my brother notices that I’ve kept his book hostage for a year)
The Judgement: KEEP
Fuse – Julianna Baggott
I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it a lot, I just never got around to reading this one. This is a dystopian book about a world where something happened that they call the Detonation, and it resulted in the people being fused with pretty much anything that was close to them. There are people who have toys merged in their bodies and other things like that.
The Judgement: KEEP
I hope you liked this, and let me know if you want to join in? Also let me know what you think of the name, I am still in doubt whether I like it or not…
This is awesome. I want to do this myself 🙂

It’s embarrasing..I have over 300 books on my to be-read shelf..So, I will be probably doing this post! I just have to organise everything..
amazing idea! ☺

Thank you!! I don’t have that many books on my tbr (luckily) but I’ve got quite a lot of them I don’t even remember adding. I look forward to it! 🙂

Haha I get that feeling too, sometimes I think I might drown in my TBR because there are so many books on there

Definitely doing this! It sounds like a fun idea to reduce the amount of to-read books on my Goodreads shelf! The name’s great! 😍

I thought I followed your blog but I apparently I didn’t?? Well that has been fixed. This is such a good idea I need to do this too haha. I’m sure there are a lot of books on my Goodreads tbr that I’m no longer interested in. I understand your struggle with LoTR; I read Fellowship of the Ring two years ago, still need to read the rest haha.

That’s so weird that happens to me too sometimes, maybe wordpress is messing with us?
Thanks, I look forward to it 🙂
I think LoTR just isn’t for me, for some reason I find it to be extremely boring..
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yeah could be! It’s not the first time it happened
Yeah I get that! I don’t really remember how I felt about it. I was bored, but I also kind of liked it?

Such a good idea! Definitely going to be doing this! By the way you are not missing anything by ditching Wuthering Heights! I had to read it for English Lit at school and it was one of the most insufferable classics I’ve ever picked up – the ‘strange English’ spoken by one of the characters is just a really broad Yorkshire dialect. I couldn’t understand it either but it was more the characters and the confusing relationship between the characters that puts me off ever re-reading it. I’ve also never read Lord of the Rings but since I got bored reading The Hobbit, I know (and other people have told me) that LoTR will just be as boring and hard to get into.

Oh it wasn’t old English? Anyway it was impossible to read. I often have a hard time getting into reading classics and when they start talking in some language I don’t understand, that doesn’t really help. I’m happy I didn’t miss anything interesting 🙂
I tried to read LoTR but after 300 pages of walking I had enough, but I believe they walk during the entire series? I don’t know how the story continues after the first book, I never got past the first movie either. I’ve also tried watching the first Hobbit movie but I literally fell asleep (probably because I was on a plane at night but still.. not a good sign).
I’m happy you will be joining in, I look forward to it!

No, although since Wuthering Heights was written in the 19 Century, the dialect has probably changed a bit since then. I am however not too sure though, as I’m not attuned to hearing a normal broad Yorkshire accent and dialect.

Oh me neither, English isn’t even my first language so I have no clue whatsoever concerning accents and dialects

I’m definitely going to do this. My TBR is ridiculous and I don’t even recognize HALF of the books I put on there right now. This should be fun 😀 And I think the TBR is great! I’m always up for Alice in Wonderland references

Going through your entire TBR is so much work, splitting it in small parts makes is manageable!

Definitely! I’m going to try this approach and see if I can make some headway on my 4k+ books on my TBR. O_O

Wow 4K+?? And I thought I had a large TBR, I already feel like drowning in it and mine is less than 100 books

I think anything over 50 gets to be intimidating! I can’t even look at one page of my TBR without freaking out about what I’m going to read.

Keep trying on the books that are hard to get into because I tried to read the sixth Dune book at 26 and was thinking WTH is this, ha ha, but when I reread the series at 49, I had no trouble at all and loved it.
I did my first Down the TBR Hole post! http://lalatoadstone.blogspot.com/2016/12/down-tbr-hole-1.html#comment-3051954089

I’m considering a year-long project for 2018 doing this type of thing, but with books I actually own (I have at LEAST 100 books on my shelves that I’ve never read). I could take a handful off my shelf each week, look them up on Goodreads, do a blog post about them, and then donate the ones I don’t care as much about. It would help my clean up my actual shelves a bit and also help me decide which books to read for my 2018 reading challenge, since I’m planning to do a Shelf Love thing again where I read mostly books I already own. And it would be a fun thing for my blog! 😀 Thanks for the idea!!! — Is it ok if I snag your logo for it? It’s so pretty! 😀

I don’t have that many unread books on my shelves but I think it’s great to get your priorities straight! Of course you can steal my logo (I do have a newer one now, you can use that too if you prefer). Good luck with your project!!

I found you through the Boston Book Reader and I so needed this idea! I have been trying a chapter with many of my physical books but my Goodreads TBR is just out of control (sitting at over 1200 books). I will definitely be giving this a try, maybe try to get through 2 books a day/60ish books a month. Thanks so much for the idea and inspiration!
